Any mom of an athlete knows the dilemma of trying to pull off a successful sports banquet within a tight budget. In my experience, the decorations are always the last items on any coach’s list with the least amount of money allocated for these all important items. Budget friendly decorations can be challenging to pull together while maintaining a classy look.
So enters my inexpensive idea for centerpieces for my daughter’s recent soccer banquet. I must give credit where credit is due….PINTEREST! I don’t have any one single person to credit for this idea. Mine actually is a mish-mash of a hundred or so posts I reviewed in preparation for this banquet…..no kidding! What we moms won’t do for our kids, right!?! Because spending hours on Pinterest is such a personal sacrifice!
Above are the supplies used and a couple of pictures of the centerpieces as they were being assembled. Once you have all your supplies the first step is to hot glue the styrofoam discs to the lids of the Gatorade bottles. Now, if you are a great planner and want to be super frugal you can recycle your kids’ Gatorade bottles and also be on the look out at Christmas clearance time for the tissue paper and ribbon. Just be sure to put some rocks or water in the recycled bottle to give it some weight so it will stand up when the skewers with embellishments are added to the top. I simply purchased the Gatorades at my local Wal-Mart for .88 cents.
Next you will be using the tissue paper and ribbons. As you can see from the pictures our school colors are red, white and blue. So I did several different combos of the colors using about 4-8 pieces of tissue paper. Be sure to stagger the sheets and then gather and tie them just below the cap of the Gatorade bottle-fluffing and separating the tissue paper for a fuller look. The next step is where you can use your own creativity! Affix any letters, embellishments (soccer, basketball, etc) and photos to the skewers. I simply used scotch tape for affixing the photos so that they could be easily removed for the athletes’ family to take home as mementos. Finally, arrange your embellished skewers by placing them into the styrofoam lids.
And there you have it.. a super cute and inexpensive set of centerpieces for any sports banquet, birthday party, baby shower, or gathering.
Good luck! Let me know below in the comments how it goes or if you have any questions.
